A beetle in a purple-edged toga

Tripped over a rotten stump and annoyed this character. A Violet Ground Beetle or one of its look-alikes. I think it’s Carabus violaceus but they are hard to tell apart from C. problematicus (apologies for the comedy Roman name).

Anyway, back to the VGB. It’s a predator that emerges at night to hunt for animals such as slugs and other smaller insects. Must get some for the garden.

The larvae are carnivorous too, often feeding on snails, worms, and smaller insects like the adult beetles do.
