Lovely Beech

There are some big, old beeches in Melick Wood.  This one is near the boundary wall and looks as though it has been pollarded at some point in its history, as all the branches sprout from one point on the trunk.

We call it the lovely beech, not because it is particularly lovely but because it looks as though, long ago, a heart has been carved into its trunk.
