A large area of Warleigh Wood has been given over to plantation on an ancient woodland site (PAWS), with either larch or scots pines.

One acre of scots pines is contained within Melick Wood.  Scots pine is one of three conifers native to the United Kingdom, the other two being yew and juniper.

The scots pine provides good habitat for wildlife such as lichen, insects and birds:
