Pussy willow

The yellow furry catkins of male goat willow (Salix caprea) give rise to its common name of pussy willow. Female catkins are green and longer.  The bees fly high to take advantage of this early nectar source.

Catkins are a sign of spring and branches of pussy willow are carried during Palm Sunday processions  by eastern European Orthodox churches.  This seems more connected to the landscape than the Church of England equivalent – a small cross made from palm leaf.
