Hawthorns often hybridise to pink in the hedgerows but these two may trees are a special Crimson Cloud variety that we were given. They make a small patch of vivid colour within a large wood.
Further to a previous post (https://melickblog.wordpress.com/2016/04/11/quickthorn/) we have since learnt more about the folklore around the may tree. The tree flowers around the middle of May, but before the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1752 it flowered very close to the beginning of the month. Hence is has many associations with May Day festivities.
