Woundwort’s Latin name is Stachys sylvatica which roughly translates as “forest spike of flowers”.   The flowers are popular with bees and the crushed leaves emit a pungent smell

As the name woundwort suggests, it has been used as a herb to heal wounds, arrest bleeding and provide antiseptic salve.  This reputation led to its other name of allheal.
