Traveller’s Joy (Clematis vitalba) is the flower that eventually forms the feathery seedheads of Old Man’s Beard.

This vigorous climber is overwhelming some trees in the wood so we are occasionally brutal with it.  But as we are gradually discovering, every plant in the wood is important in the ecological matrix: clematis is the sole food for many species of moth larvae and the seeds are important for finches.
