Common foxglove, Digitalis purpurea, is a biennial plant that leafs in the first year and flowers in the second.  The name digitalis comes from the way the flowers fit onto fingertips.

It prefers acidic soils but will grow on calcareous soils, especially if there has been soil disturbance.

All parts of the plant are poisonous.
