At the top of the wood the rocks contain fossil outlines.

According to British Geological Survey mapping this area is in the vicinity of the Bath Oolite limestone stratum – “sedimentary bedrock formed approximately 165 to 168 million years ago in the Jurassic Period.”

These rocks were formed in warm shallow seas with carbonate deposited on platform, shelf and slope areas; often rich in corals and shelly  faunas.
