Common puffball

The common puffball (Lycoperdon perlatum) has some interesting alternate names such as gem-studded puffball, or the devil’s snuff-box.

The off-white dome is covered with spiny bumps.  When mature the dome becomes brown, and a hole in the top opens to release spores.

The puffball is edible but easy to confuse with other poisonous species.
