Nectria cinnabarina typically lives on dead beech wood but it can affect sycamore, horse chestnut and hornbeam.  The airborne spores can infect living trees, typically through wounds,  if the tree is stressed.

Nectria comes from necrosis and means “killer”.  Cinnabarina means cinnabar-coloured (after the mineral).
