Funaria hygrometrica is a common moss found on bare soil in woodland, moorland and in gardens.  It occurs frequently on burnt soil, such as on bonfire sites.

Sporophytes bear capsules on a long swan-neck stalk or seta.  Immature capsules have a pointed calyptra covering, the more rounded capsules are spore-bearing.
