We found a cluster of small blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) shrubs in our zone of the woods but they are not flowering, probably due to lack of sunshine.  If we chop down some weedy ash we can let light in to encourage them to flower.

Further down the hill, the sunny southern edge of the wood is fringed by a swathe of blackthorn blossom.

The thorns are formidable but the early flowers are beautiful. Autumn sloes to flavour your gin are a definite bonus.
