Another Scribble

Now we have our eye in, we have spotted a few more scribble lichens growing in the wood, especially on the hazel. We really are guessing because you need a microscope, but this one above with the curved lirella looks like the common Graphis scripta. The one below looks quite different doesn’t it? Maybe it is a different species we haven’t found in the books, or maybe its just variation or a different substrate texture. To add to the confusion, Graphis scripta is a complex it seems, i.e. a name given to a group of potentially several very similar looking species. There’s paper here if you’re interested.
